Writing a role
How to describe a job so a worker can hold it, and so the person accountable can recognise it.
A role is written in your own language, not in ours. It states the work, what finished looks like, and who it answers to. If a new member of staff could not start from the document, a worker cannot either.
Three things make a role specific enough to build against. The trigger: what causes the work to exist. The finished condition: how anyone can tell it is done. The exceptions: the cases where the ordinary path does not apply, and what should happen instead.
Roles are versioned. When the work changes, the role is amended and the amendment is part of the record. A worker never operates against an undocumented change.
